Sang is a proverbial jack of all trades – a hair dresser, a chef, a small business owner, a demonstration in tenacity, an improvisatrice. Coming to the U.S. from Laos in 1988,speaking hardly any English, “hello” and “goodbye,” Sang knew her job prospects were limited. “I knew with no English I could only get three jobs: nanny, cook, or maid.”
She landed a job as a nanny and then as a cook at a Thai restaurant. Eager for opportunity, she enrolled in LADO International College and got a job as a shampoo girl. Sang was only earning $5.25 an hour, but it was all part of her bigger plan. “As a shampoo girl I could practice my English all day and learn how a beauty salon was run.”
While working towards her first career-defining moment – her acceptance into beauty school –Sang also worked in a deli and as a waitress. Upon her graduation from beauty school, Sang worked for Bubble Hair Saloon on K Street for two years before owning her own salon in Woodley Park which she sold for a tidy profit. Sang currently rents a chair at La Bella Vita Salon at 2601 Calvert St NW in Woodley Park, where she cuts hair part-time. Why part time? Because…
Sang’s newest venture is a food truck, Sang on Wheels, which you can follow on Twitter at SangOnWheels. Come and enjoy some of Sang’s Laos/Asian Fusion cuisine –drunken noodles, Laotian egg roles, lamb balls, Asian empanados and the list goes on. She also has great options for vegetarians. The Tofu Drunken Noodles are delicious! And don’t be surprised if you walk away with a bit Sang’s contagious optimism.
